I'm glad this and the plantation scene, and the surfboard hijinks were all cut. We don't need Willard to cozy up to the crew, it does nothing for his character or the story. It's a distraction and it lessens the tension, it does not deepen or widen it. likewise the scene with them stealing the surfboard. The plantation scene actually holds well with the feel of the film; incrediibly surreal. Great performances and a nice dip into French Colonialism. But who cares? The more this film uses Vietnam as a back drop so we can focus on Willard and Kurtz and the essence of their arguments, and the less it becomes a commentary about Vietnam the War, the better a film it becomes.

It's not a bad scene in itself, but cutting it was the right thing to do. It doesn't work with the rest of the movie. There is a limit to how many strange episodes a PBR crew may encounter on a routine mission up a river in Indochina and still make it believable. Of course, there was another scene that really deserved being cut more than the plantation scene and that was the encounter with the R&R girls in the downed helicopter, and fortunately that one was cut as well. In comparison to the Final Cut, the theatrical release really is the better movie, which is only testament to Coppola's genius as a film director.

I've seen this film many times in the last 25 years and find I like it less the more I see it. It's really an overrated mess and isn't a very good film. The acting is over the top and clownish at times. There are some good shots in the movie though and for that it's worth watching once.
